European Automotive Industry is suffering from a skill gap between engineering graduates and industry practices. This paper introduces a collaborative research aiming at establishing a certified automotive engineering design curriculum which shall serve as a springboard to highly qualified engineering design jobs in the automotive industry. Based on the European AQUA sector skills alliance, this research brings together major players from industry and higher education. Integrated design education with a clear ECTS-ECVET evaluation scheme plays a key role in this curriculum, since most of the modern skill challenges in automotive are related to interdisciplinary design optimization of quality and costs.

The driverless or autonomous car offers a range of challenges and opportunities – technical, economic and social – to the UK and the world. Harrow led the academic research for GATEway, an £8M Innovate UK project led for industry by the Transport Research Laboratory in which the RCA was the principal university. It created a world-leading test-bed for driverless cars that enabled automotive and software industries, local authorities, planners, insurers, Government ministers, policy makers and others to evaluate new vehicles and new technologies applied to existing vehicles, and to understand the human behaviours and attitudes emerging around these new forms of transport. AHRC Design Fellows: Challenges of the future: Mobility

In December 2019, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) issued a call for a three-month Design Fellowship at a Design Research Centre of Excellence in Mobility Research to review the British university-led design research landscape working on The Future of Mobility. The aim was to better understand the role of design research in this challenging area, the economic and social impact of design research and provide recommendations about how to support design researchers in academia, highlighting their contributions to the country as a whole. This resulting report provides insights through the lens of design professionals about design research in the context of the Future of Mobility – key research topics, where design is and is not used, emerging areas of design research in mobility, collaborations between design and other disciplines, the commercial value of design research, identified skill-sets for mobility design researchers, and supporting infrastructure.

Engineers' work on the move: challenges in automobile engineering in a globalized world (2011)

Engineering work in the German automotive industry is currently being dictated by corporate reorganization processes. These are driven by processes of informatization, financialization, and globalization, and evince an increase in the (global) division of labor in product development, as well as an increase in competitive pressures. Being able to deal with information and knowledge is important for coping with these processes at work. In terms of engineers' work, this means that engineers must be able to deal with the increasing amounts of information available in the form of benchmark figures, data, etc., as well as with the challenges presented by work shared in global networks. This paper presents the results of a series of qualitative interviews. The main trends that can be pointed out are the ‘enucleation’ (removing the core) of engineering work, the loss of autonomy, increasing insecurity, and the changing materiality of the objects worked on. Enucleation processes are increasingly changing older engineers' fields of work. More and more, they are being called upon to take over communication and coordination practices. In connection with increasing insecurity, employees' perception of their own position in the company is changing and, in the end, their strategies of action, as well.
