Job overview

The discharge lounge offers a safe comfortable environment for patients whilst waiting to be discharged from hospital to their home. Patients are discharged through the Lounge to maintain and facilitate capacity and flow of the hospital, freeing up much needed beds for emergency and elective patients on a day to day basis. As a Registered Nurse working in the team you will work within the discharge team alongside site managers and ward team to ensure seamless discharges.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward thinking staff nurse to join the team in the Discharge Lounge at Kettering General Hospital.

Working with a well established team, the post holder will be able to work independently to work with the ward teams to move patients to the discharge lounge to support with capacity and patient flow.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Discharge Lounge nurse will assist patients with:

  • The prescribed medications required to take home on discharge. These will be explained by the trained member of staff.
  • Follow up District nurse referrals if needed.
  • Administer any medications as needed and indicated.
  • Liaise Site Managers, Discharge Coordinators and Care providers.
  • Liaise with transport.
  • Liaise with pharmacy.
  • Contact next of kin.
  • Check observations when needed.
  • Health education on Discharge.
  • Supporting in all matters relating to the patients discharge.

In submitting an application form, you authorise Kettering General Hospital (KGH) NHS Foundation Trust to confirm any previous NHS service details via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) process. Including factual reference, occupational health clearance and statutory and mandatory training record.

If you need to have a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check, as a requirement of the role, you will be required to repay the cost of obtaining a DBS check (£50) and this amount will be reclaimed from your first salary. From 1st February 2019 all new starters to the Trust are required to join the DBS update service as per Trust DBS Re-checking Policywhich has an annual cost of £13. New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.

Please note that news starters with KGH are subject to a six month probationary period.

  • The ability to make judgments on problems requiring investigation, analysis e.g., assessment of patient condition, suitability for discharge
  • Able to allocate and delegate workload responsibly and monitor the work of others; clinical supervision of junior staff
